Kaspersky holds one perfect score, while Bitdefender has one perfect score and one recent almost-perfect rating. Bitdefender didn’t appear in the latest report from this lab.Note, though, that just last month, before the newest report, Bitdefender had a 17.5-point score from AV-Test, enough to earn it the designation Top Product. Kaspersky aced all three, for a perfect 18 points. An antivirus can earn up to six points in each category. That’s hard to beat.Winner: Norton Winner: Norton Which Mac Antivirus Is More Affordable?You want the antivirus that does the best job of protecting your Mac. All features are available, and you can choose the server that suits you best. That’s low compared to the price of most standalone VPNs, but it’s an extra fee.Norton, on the other hand, gives you Norton Secure VPN, a full-featured no-limits VPN that you can use on five devices. You can protect three devices by raising that to $59.99. But neither Bitdefender nor Norton fits that mold.Like many macOS antivirus products, Bitdefender costs $39.99 per year. Such products exist in the realm of macOS antivirus, it’s true. Antivirus Starting License Bitdefender SubscriptionAt $21 per device, Norton is hardly different. With the three-license Bitdefender subscription, you pay $20 per device. Conversely, there isn’t a three-license price for Norton, in case you need fewer licenses.For a fair comparison, let’s look at the price per device. There isn’t a five-license Bitdefender price, for those who want more. The very best products come in at or near 100 percent detection and handily outscore the protection built into Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.With 99% detection, Bitdefender currently holds the top phishing detection score among macOS products. We also discard any that don’t attempt to capture login credentials, since that’s the very definition of a phishing fraud. Performing this test on the Mac is a matter of pasting each URL into the browser and manually recording the antivirus product’s response.Before making any calculations, we discard any sample that threw an error message in any of the four browsers. Under Windows, a handy utility launches each URL in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, and serves as a note-taker for the results. Most antivirus tools include some form of phishing detection, to help you avoid such scams.For our phishing protection test, we collect hundreds of reported phishing URLs, include many that are too new to have gone through analysis and hit the blacklists. It defines network permissions for known good programs, sends bad programs to perdition, and keeps a careful watch on any unknowns. And if hackers are foolish enough launch their attacks from known malicious websites, the DeepSight feature shuts them down pronto.Norton offers full-fledged program control on Windows. It keeps watch for network exploits that attack OS vulnerabilities. Norton 360 is a suite product, both on macOS and Windows, and it includes a full-scale firewall.As expected, Norton protects your Mac from outside attack, foiling port scans and other such attacks. Antivirus and firewall, right? In fact, some high-end antivirus tools throw in firewall protection as a bonus. Bitdefender wins this one, though not by a lot.Winner: Bitdefender, barely Winner: Bitdefender, barely What About Firewall Protection?When you list the expected components in a security suite, what do you start with. Bitdefender is nominally just an antivirus, but it adds plenty of bonus features. But on the Mac, firewall protection is a no-show.Winner: Norton Winner: Norton Bonus Feature BonanzaOn the Mac, Norton offers a suite, but one that doesn’t have nearly the feature spread of its Windows equivalent. You do have to turn on program control out of the box, it’s disabled.As for Bitdefender, well, its Windows security suites boast an intelligent, no-hassle firewall, and its Windows antivirus offers a Network Threat Protection component that performs some firewall-style tasks. The firewall on macOS isn’t as elaborate, but it does serve to manage the way programs access the network. Filezilla for mac 1013You can dig in to see what it’s blocking, including an estimate of the page load time saved by suppressing the trackers. Bitdefender has the power to actively foil these trackers, without interfering with your own online activities. Other trackers have their own reasons for spying on you. Ad trackers watch your activities, working to perfect their profile of your interests so they can manipulate the ads you see. However, a missed zero-day ransomware attack has such dire consequences that many add a ransomware-specific protection layer. Knowing when your data has been stolen can help you prevent full-on identity theft.Every antivirus should defend against all kinds of malware, including ransomware. Tracked info can include street addresses, credit cards, email addresses, and more. It can monitor the dark web and alert you when any of your personal information turns up where it shouldn’t be. Norton relies on more traditional approaches to fend off ransomware.If your system seems sluggish, you may be tempted to blame the antivirus. Bitdefender also protects your Time Machine backups. You can edit those files using your trusted programs, but an intruder triggers a warning and gives you the chance to block access.
